This painting derives from a small felt tip pen drawing of a friend's garden around Christmas time 2021. This is the third painting derived from this sketch. There's a real excitement in making a painting again of the same image. It allows you to concentrate less on the actual image or motif and instead really focus on the paint and the colours. In this picture I wanted to move away from the reduced colour palette I was using and use some bright fresh colours, initially inspired by hues used by David Hockney when he painted the Grand Canyon, but as the painting moved on these colours became more and more mine with soft lime greens appearing.
