Pritam, 2015, 30.5cm x 24.5cm, oil and transparent photograph on canvas
Once framed approx size 38cm x 32cm
A mixed media painting by the London based artist Robert Dunt. In this series of paintings by Robert, which he has called the Icon series, the artist wanted to work with powerful icons from history, politics and celebrity and combine them with colour and chaos.
His aim was to work with the icons without trying to give them a narrative, but to use them as purely visual shapes. Once he had used them as shapes a poetic unintended narrative would appear from the use of the paint.
The uses of icons like Che or Marilyn Monroe or Mickey Mouse can be seen as cliched but Robert's aim was to subvert their use from the way they often appear allowing the art and paint to take control of the final image, which is why the polka dots float over, but don't overwhelm, the icon in the image.
