A limited edition print from Robert's 'Orchid Suite' series depicting the interior of one of the rooms in Count Kalnoky's Guest House in Romania. The print is made from an original pencil drawing that the artist made while he was staying there. Robert then scanned the pencil drawing into photoshop, and inserted the original photographs taken on site to produce the finished digital montage.
The work is based on a few simple contrasts such as the black and white drawing and the photographs of Romania. The white expanse to the left lets the right hand drawn section breathe, conferring an elegance to the work. The work also references cubism and Braque, in the way Robert sees through the foot of the bed, that he is lying on while drawing, to the windows and door of the room.
This and the other prints in the 'Orchid Suite' series were inspired by Picasso's Vollard Suite where Picasso often set up images between an artist, his model and the work he has produced. It is as if the work the artist has made is a reflection of the model he has copied. There is a poetic strand in these works about the real world and its reflection and depiction by artists, as Picasso is often seen to be gazing at both the model and the work he has produced.
Prince Charles is known to stay at this guest house in Romania.
